Studying Archaeology in Sheffield

Ian began his archaeological studies at The Institute for Lifelong Learning (TILL) by taking a 2-year course equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree in Archaeology..  Along the way, he has studied several local sites, and full versions of his findings can be viewed by following the links in the box above.

After TILL, Ian transferred to the part-time BA degree in the Department of Archaeology, where he studied ancient materials (pottery, glass and metalworking artefacts), the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Ages, the Graeco-Roman period, medieval Europe, research methods, archaeological theory, practical fieldwork techniques including geophysics and surveying. Summer digs at Manor Lodge, Castleton and Brodsworth were also fun.  He spent two years studying Quarrying on the Eastern Moors near Baslow, for his final year dissertaion.

Ian would like to express his thanks to all his tutors for their support and encouragement, particularly Phil Sidebottom, Helen Ullathorne, Willy Kitchen, Bob Johnston and Colin Merrony.  Their help in writing these papers is much appreciated, but any errors or omissions are of course all down to the author alone.
